Witcher Chair
I’m a bit of a nerd/geek. I freely admit it. I am quite proud of it! As I’m sure you could have guessed, I know quite a bit about wood. I could also teach you more about beer than you’d ever want to know. I’m a big fantasy fan, and have read all of the Witcher books and played the games, and now my wife and I just recently finished the second season of The Witcher, on Netflix (which, while somewhat different than the first book of the saga, was quite excellent). Naturally, it is now a topic of conversation between myself and my best friend. During said conversations, he brought up an interesting idea; what if I were to build a “Witcher chair?” Might be a lot of fun! Would Henry Cavill buy it and sit in it while he paints Warhammer figurines?
Well, what if I were to build one? What would it look like? I think the first thing is to define the approach. Should it be an homage type thing, incorporating graphic elements from the games/show? Something with a carved back that incorporates a wolf medallion and two swords. Or should it look like something directly from the source material that has transcended literary, cinematic, and game (is there a word for this yet) barriers and come to life? Something you can actually picture Geralt of Rivia sitting in as he ponders philosophy in Kaer Morhen. Personally I like the latter approach. But again, what would that look like? It shouldn’t be too elegant; not like something out of Emperor Emhyr’s palace. Nor should it be overly plain, found in the tavern common rooms of Blaviken. Witchers, after all, do seem to appreciate the skill and craftsmanship of fine blades. Maybe there would be elements of different monsters carved into it, in some way. What of the techniques? Traditional joinery of course. For some reason I’m also picturing bent lamination somewhere in the chair. The wood? Oak is a little too boring. Probably something common to Poland, like sycamore, birch, or elm.
What do you think? I’m curious for others’ thoughts on this. Leave some in the comments below, and maybe, just maybe, I’ll actually design and build it!
Oh, and Henry, if you’re reading this, then contact me and let us put our heads together for a design!
